Prince George
The Prince George Rivers Day Committee hosts the Annual B.C. Rivers
Day Music Festival on the banks of two significant rivers -- the
Fraser and Nechako. This unique event, held in Prince George, British
Columbia, celebrates the importance of rivers on international, provincial,
and local levels.
The
Festival is one of a number
of "Wonder of Water" initiatives taking place throughout Canada.
Itis the official music festival of B.C. Rivers Day, a province-wide
initiative held every year on the last Sunday of September.
Since its inception in 1980, B.C. Rivers Day -- founded by the
B.C. Outdoor Recreation Council -- has become the largest river celebration
of its kind in Canada. By uniting top quality musical acts with interactive
watershed stewardship and community displays, children’s activities,
local and provincial media coverage, the Festival combines celebration,
education, and community involvement within the framework of Prince
George's unique river heritage.
People attending the festival learn about the significance of rivers
and fresh water within a local, provincial, and global context, as well
as to take in some great music.
Prince George is an appropriate location to hold the official festival
of B.C. Rivers Day, as it is situated on the largest confluence of water
in the Upper Fraser Region -- a region supporting three of the largest
salmon runs in the world and the endangered Nechako River White Sturgeon.
Past performers include such top quality artists as David Gogo, country
star Duane Steele, B.C. rock legend Barney Bentall, Bill Henderson (formerly
of the band Chilliwack), 1993 Juno Award winner Gary Fjellgaard, and
2002 Juno Nominee Marcel Gagnon.
The Festival brings top quality music acts to the shores of the mighty
Fraser River. The Festival’s purpose is to educate and reach out to
the community of Prince George and surrounding region on the social,
cultural, and environmental importance and value of our local water
resources.
We promote individual responsibility as well as collective accountability
for the stewardship of water.
